PETRIE

Petrie {William Matthew Flinders}, égyptologue anglais {1853 1942}.

Cet autodidacte, après avoir suivi des fouilles en Angleterre et s'être intéressé à la métrologie, part pour l'Égypte en 1880. Il étudie et mesure les pyramides de Gizeh et séjourne sur place deux ans. Entre 1884 et 1886 il fouille pour le compte de l'Égypte Exploration Fund. Après deux ans d'indépendance, Petrie recommence à travailler pour le Fund de 1896 à 1906.

C'est le premier à utiliser des méthodes de fouilles statistiques et scientifiques en Égypte où il travailla pendant quarante-deux ans. D'une activité exceptionnelle et quasi incessante sur les chantiers de Haute et Basse-Égypte, mais aussi en Palestine, il fit d'innombrables découvertes, publiant au fur et à mesure ses rapports de fouilles, comportant la description rapide de tout le matériel recueilli.
