CARTER

Carter {Howard}, égyptologue anglais {1874-1939}.

Peintre de formation, il devient membre de l'Archaeological Survey. Il travaille en Égypte avec Petrie en 1892 et fut attaché, comme dessinateur, dans les relevés de Beni Hassan et d'el-Bersheh. Toujours en tant que dessinateur il participe aux travaux et publication de Naville à Deir el-Bahari, entre 1893 et 1899, où il copie toutes les scènes et les inscriptions du complexe funéraire de la reine Hatshepsout. Il devient, en 1899, inspecteur général des monuments de Haute Égypte et en 1903, inspecteur des antiquités de Basse Égypte. Il est engagé par Lord Carnavon {1866-1923}, en 1907, pour réaliser des copies de peintures dans la Vallée des Rois. Ces travaux le conduisent à découvrir quelques tombes royales {Mentouhotep II, Aménophis I^er} ainsi que diverses tombes privées. Sa plus fantastique découverte fut la tombe inviolée de Toutankamon, le 4 novembre 1922. Il consacra les 10 années suivant cette découverte à l'inventaire et au classement des objets découverts.
