BIBAN EL-MOULOUK LA VALLEE DES ROIS

Ouadi s'ouvrant dans la chaîne libyque, près de Thèbes, un peu au nord du temple funéraire de Séthi Ier à Gournah, ses bords sont creusés profondément de tombes, ou hypogées, dont l'entrée était fermée par une porte, d'où le nom de Bïbâm el-Moulouk {portes des rois} donné par les arabes.

La tombe de Thoutmosis I^er fut la première creusée dans la vallée des rois, avec comme maître d'oeuvre Ineni. A partir de Thoutmosis III la vallée s'impose définitivement comme nécropole royale durant tout le Nouvel Empire {tous les rois des XVIII^e, XIX^e et XX^e dynasties à l'exception d'Akhenaton y furent enterrés}.

On trouve 62 tombes répertoriées, 58 dans la vallée des Rois et 4 dans la branche occidentale ainsi qu'un dépôt funéraire d'Amenhotep III, près de la tombe N°22, et un début de tombe creusée près de la tombe N°34. Il y a dans la vallée deux tombes de femmes: Hatshepsout et Taousert. La dernière tombe creusée fut celle de Ramsès XI, durant son règne certaines tombes de la vallée furent profanées. C'est à Pinedjem que nous devons la dernière inscription hiéroglyphique de la vallée et, c'est aussi grâce à lui que furent sauvées nombre de momies royales par le déménagement et le transfert des momies vers des lieux plus sûrs {Deir el-Bahari}.

En -900 la plupart des tombes de la vallée avaient été vidées de leur contenu, avec le déclin de la puissance égyptienne et l'abandon progressif de Karnak la vallée s'enfonça dans les ténèbres.
